This 5-day itinerary provides a balanced approach to summiting Kilimanjaro, combining necessary acclimatization time with the opportunity to reach the summit and descend safely. Enjoy your climb!
Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Marangu Gate
- Arrival: Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport.
- Transfer: Drive to the Marangu Gate (approx. 1.5 to 2 hours from Moshi).
- Registration: Complete the necessary paperwork and start your trek.
- Hiking: Begin your trek through lush rainforest to Mandara Hut (2,700 meters / 8,860 feet).
- Duration: Approximately 3-4 hours of hiking.
- Overnight: Mandara Hut.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
- Hiking: Continue from Mandara Hut through heathland and moorland to Horombo Hut (3,700 meters / 12,140 feet).
- Duration: Approximately 5-6 hours of hiking.
- Acclimatization: Take it slow to help with acclimatization.
- Overnight: Horombo Hut.
Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
- Hiking: Trek from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,700 meters / 15,420 feet). You will pass through the alpine desert zone.
- Duration: Approximately 4-5 hours of hiking.
- Rest: Arrive at Kibo Hut and rest for the night. Prepare for the summit attempt by getting as much rest as possible.
- Overnight: Kibo Hut.
Day 4: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Descend to Horombo Hut
- Summit Attempt: Wake up early (around midnight) and start your ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters / 19,341 feet). The climb to the summit is challenging, involving a steep, icy path and high altitude.
- Duration: Approximately 6-8 hours to reach the summit.
- Summit: Spend a short time at the summit to take photos and enjoy the view.
- Descent: After summiting, descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut.
- Duration: Approximately 6-8 hours from the summit back to Horombo Hut.
- Overnight: Horombo Hut.
Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate and Departure
- Descend: Hike from Horombo Hut back to Marangu Gate.
- Duration: Approximately 5-6 hours of hiking.
- Celebration: Complete the trek, sign out at the gate, and receive your certificate of achievement.
- Transfer: Drive back to Moshi or Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure or onward travel.
Additional Tips
- Acclimatization: The Marangu Route has a good acclimatization profile, but altitude sickness can still occur. Ensure you stay hydrated, eat well, and take the climb slowly.
- Gear: Bring appropriate gear including warm clothing, waterproofs, hiking boots, gloves, and a good sleeping bag.
- Health: Ensure you have proper vaccinations and are prepared for potential altitude sickness. Consult with a medical professional before your climb.
- Guide: A licensed guide and porters are required for climbing Kilimanjaro, so book through a reputable tour operator.
